Stand for Children, Stand for Public Schools Saves 2,700 Jobs
We work for the public schools — for our kids; and we worked together with the District to find a solution.
Our strong stand saved 2,700 jobs in Philadelphia this summer. The jobs of every 32BJ member working for the School District of Philadelphia were on the chopping block because of enormous state and city budget cuts. Every maintenance worker, building engineer, school cleaner, school bus driver, and bus attendant already had received a layoff notice. But 32BJ would not stand by and let our public schools be destroyed and our communities weakened. We marched in the streets, engaged in civil disobedience, testified before the Philadelphia City Council, and rallied the support of parents and community groups across the state. The result: We reached an agreement which saves jobs and provides financial relief to the School District.
