NEW YORK— 32BJ SEIU members today announced their endorsement of Tom Suozzi to represent Long Island and Queens in Congress.

Suozzi, a CPA and attorney, has served as mayor of his hometown, Glen Cove, NY, and as Nassau County Executive. Before Suozzi took office as Nassau County Executive, the county was on the brink of bankruptcy. Suozzi successfully steered Nassau back from financial collapse and restored it to fiscal stability. He is also known for his focus on environmental issues and his efforts to keep Medicaid costs low.

“Tom Suozzi has a track record of fighting for working families on Long Island and will fight for them in Congress,” said 32BJ President Hector Figueroa. “Our members were impressed by his commitment to protecting workers’ rights and creating more good jobs with good benefits that working families need in Queens, Long Island and across our country.”

32BJ members held a screening with candidates running to represent the 3rd District of New York to find out their position on the key issues that are important to them and their families, including the Fight For $15, affordable housing, immigration reform and airports workers’ organizing campaign to win good jobs and union representation across the country.

“Tom Suozzi has the experience under his belt to stand tough when he works with other legislators in Washington, and to stand up for issues that we at 32BJ believe in, including supporting the construction of more affordable housing and putting a stop to immigration enforcement policies that separate families,” said  Jairo Quintero, a 32BJ member who lives in Queens and was part of the nomination screening committee.

With 155,000 members in eleven states and Washington, D.C., including 2,200 who live and work on Long Island, 32BJ SEIU is the largest property service workers union in the country.
